Frequently Asked Questions
- How does ghactivity work?
- We create real git commits with backdated timestamps and push them to a repository on your account. GitHub renders these on your contribution graph just like any other activity. No bots, no hacks — just commits.
- Will this get my GitHub account banned?
- No. Backdated commits are a standard git feature used by developers every day (rebasing, cherry-picking, migrating repos). There's nothing against GitHub's Terms of Service.
- How long does it take to show up on my profile?
- Usually within a few minutes. After you apply a pattern, we push the commits and GitHub picks them up on your next profile page load.
- What happens when the graph scrolls forward each week?
- On the free tier, your art will gradually scroll off the left edge over time. Pro and Studio subscribers get automatic weekly updates that keep your art intact as the graph moves.
- Can other people tell the commits are from ghactivity?
- On the free and Pro tiers, commits go to a public repo on your account, so someone clicking into it could see. On the Studio tier, commits are pushed to a private repo — only you know they're there.
- What permissions does ghactivity need?
- We request minimal GitHub permissions — just enough to create a repository and push commits on your behalf. We never read your private repos or profile data beyond what's needed.
- Can I use my own design instead of a preset?
- Yes! Pro and Studio subscribers get access to a custom pixel editor where you can draw anything you want on a 52×7 grid with four intensity levels, matching GitHub's shading.
- What if I want to remove the art from my graph?
- Delete the repository ghactivity created on your account. GitHub will recalculate your contribution graph and the art will disappear.
- Do the commits count toward my contribution total?
- Yes — GitHub counts all commits pushed to a repo you own, so your total contribution count will increase. Most users see this as a bonus.
- Is there a free tier?
- Yes. The Basic tier is free forever and includes all preset patterns. Upgrade to Pro ($2/mo) for custom designs and auto-updates, or Studio ($5/mo) to keep commits in a private repo.
